    Never underestimate the power of....

...a pretty lass to sell you kilt hose.

For a guy who likes white socks, I've been charmed into buying several pairs by the lasses at MacKinnons kilts. Charcoal, oatmeal, lovat green....heck I almost bought a pair of navy blue hose, 'cause they were on sale. Since my favorite pairs of white hose are wearing out at the heels, in fact, one has already bitten the dust, I'm down to one pair...against three pairs of colored hose, not counting my two pair of knee-high athletic sox in read and green that I wear to throw in.

Oh, and that doesn't count Strings Outrageous Kilt Hose, which are so sublime that they surpass all concern with something as trivial as color.

Or cars, unnecessary surgery, or plans for world domination!

KD Burke, she told me that I was the only one who was getting the plans for world domination.

    Drat.

As for String's Outrageously Amazing Kilt Hose, thank you for mentioning them, Alan H. I hadn't seen that thread yet. They're gorgeous.

Will you be posting photographs of your new ones?

Oh, my, the white hose dilemma again. Cheez it, the "trads" are coming!

The generally held belief in the old country is that white hose were propagated as standard and stylish by the kilt rental business as they were cheap, easy to get, and went with virtually every color tartan our there (at least thay didn't clash too badly) as well as the traditional wedding white shirts. Historically, many say that only footmen from older regal carriages and doormen wore white hose, and that a true gentleman would not be caught dead in them as they were a sign of "lesser means". You will find here on xmarks a longrunning gun battle about the propriety of white (not cream) hose with powerfully held beliefs on both sides, and others who don't really care and just wear what they think looks okay (me included). Read, listen, question, ponder, understand all points of view, then make up your own mind. Nobody is going to shoot you over the color of your hose (unless you are in east LA).

Oh, and don't even think about asking about flatcaps.

Some people like white kilt hose.

There's a point of view which says "if you like it and you think it looks good, then wear it."...and there's a point of view which says " white kilt hose might have been frowned upon at some point in the past but nowadays lots of men wear white kilt hose and since that's the case, they should be more accepted."

Some people don't like white kilt hose.

Some people feel that white is glaring and unattractive on pretty much anybody but pipe bands. Some people feel that white kilt hose are an invention of the kilt rental companies, since it's expensive to stock in hose of many colors to go with many tartans. Thus, a man wearing white kilt hose is advertising the *sic* fact that he rented his kilt and the rest of his kit. Therefore, a proper gentleman won't wear white hose if he can help it.

The subject of white kilt hose has launched a large number of threads on X Marks which have gotten ugly at times. As a general rule, I think we all have just agreed to be ladies and gentleman, not pursue the issue, and understand our differences without getting nasty about them.

As a complete and total aside, I happen to like white kilt hose ON MYSELF...and absolutely hate black kilt hose...ON MYSELF. Go figure.
