New Kilt Style

Lady Chrystel is planning in making a new period inspired kilt similar to the one Queen Victoria's husband is wearing.

Anyone interested ? We particularly like this big, deep box pleat on the side. The kilt could be tartan, of course. It wouldn't have to be solid colour.

Very unique. I also note that the gent is wearing castellated hose but with the top turned down. I've not seen them worn that way before.

Exactly what I was thinking and to be honest I think it looks much better than how they are worn today.

have you seen this particular detail in any other illustration of the time?

The only reason I ask is that, according to Matt, Peter (figheadair) and a few others I've read comments from, sometimes details of Highland wear were incorrectly recorded by artists not particularly well versed in the particulars of the style.

I'm not saying that it's not an accurate representation (I'm no kilt scholar), but as it's a bit unusual, independent corroboration from another work (Highlanders of Scotland, or similar) would certainly help establish that it was, in fact, a true pleating variant and not just an artistic mis-interpretation.

Just a thought.

Either way, I'm sure Lady Chrystel will make an amazing kilt of the style and I look forward to seeing the result.

It really doesn't matter much to us if the hose are misrepresented by the artist.

They look great, and I'll wear them.

Most of the stuff I usually wear isn't historically accurate.

Our aficionados call it "avant-garde" !

Weather it is or isnt historically accurate it doesn't matter to me. I would like to see one made but I wouldn't want one for myself. I have to many others on my list. Maybe one day.

That's an interesting style Robert. I'm not sure if I like the idea or not, but I'll remain undecided until she's made one and I can see it from other angles. It reminds me of a custom kilt she made sometime last year--the one with three large box pleats across the back and kingussie style pleats on the sides--except this would almost be its inverse. I really liked that one!

This should be another interesting piece and I'm waiting anxiously to see it.

I kind of like the kilt style myself, it's similar to an idea I had for an X-kilt I've been thinking about making. Interesting to see there (may) be historical precedent.
