Today being St. Andrew's day (and first Sunday of Advent) I went to Mass kilted, and wore my Braemer jacket and Balmoral bonnet. The most usual question was "What's the Occasion?" One, of "Do you play the pipes too?" But on one occasion when I answered "What's the Occasion? With "It's St. Andrew's day, the Patron Saint of Scotland", I got in reply "Oh are you a Golfer?" That's a new one for me. (No, I don't play golf).

Highlight of the day was a young (about 10 or so) young lady who shyly told me that she was taking lessons in Highland Dancing, and would be performing at the Burn's Night supper. I told her I would be there to watch her.

The only thing that some Americans know about St. Andrew is the golf course which bears his name, sadly.

Around 750 AD the Pictish warrior-king Unust was losing a battle to the English when St. Andrew appeared to him in a dream and promised him victory; followed by a cloud formation of a white cross against a blue sky brought fought a victory; thus, the Saltire and forever more St. Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland.
That is the significance of St. Andrew and the Saltire to us Scots.

Great story though about your St. ANdrew day experience. I was thinking since I play golf does that mean I compete in the Scottish games?

My pipe major wasn't even aware that it was St. Andrew's day... I would go easy on people for not knowing such a little known holiday.

Interesting story! My second cousin, a sweet little girl of five, is here to visit. Her first question to me was "Why are you wearing a blanket?" Very observant- and the second she's asked me that. The first was about a year ago, actually. Kids are so cute.
