Oh for the want of a kilt selvedge

I started my first attempt at an 8 yarder last Wednesday. 13 oz. upholstery fabric Gunn tartan, cotton/poly blend found @ JoAnn for $4/yd. When you have it all rolled out in front of you, that's alot of fabric! I've made the cut and joined the halves, now I am hemming the fringed selvedge. I have done about half and averaging about 15" an hour. I know the fabric is not the best choice but it's good hand stitching practice.

Re: Oh for the want of a kilt selvedge

It is a lot of fabric when laid out, but it is amazing how the pleats can swallow up yard after yard of fabric and when you put the tape across the first trial folding you can find that you need to find a couple of inches more.

I have used poly cottons and the results are not bad, but I did find that the colours faded in the sun. Maybe it increases 'kilt cred' to have a truly weathered kilt.

Definitely a project to watch. I noticed that sale the other day when I went in to get some fabric I could somewhat see thru to black out my face for my Marvin costume (somehow went missing from last year. I didn't have time to take a closer look at the time, though. Will likely go to a bigger one after I get off work tomorrow.

Lesson learned, be sure the label on the spool of thread matches the bin you pull it from. While pressing the finished hem I melted some of the stitching. Wait a minute cotton thead doesn't melt.
