ordering a new Kilt

today at 4:00 I am going to get measured and choose the tartan for my first tank. I am going for the 16oz Strome wool kilt from Kathy Lare a local kilt maker here in albuquerque NM but I am torn between the Tartan of County Cork and a more recognized Gordon, then there is always the Land of Enchantment tartan that is a NM tartan. Any suggestions on what to go with.

Further I will have to find a kilt belt for it that can fit a 53-54" waist, a sporran and straps.

Be original and get a tartan that 1000+ other people don't have. Not to bash the Gordon tartan, but it's almost as common as the Royal Stewart and Black Watch these days. Just my opinion of course, but I prefer to introduce people to new tartans rather than one that is very common. Now if Gordon is the family name and that is what you would like to represent....awesome, but if you are just picking a tartan, go for something unique. Personally I would go for the County Cork. Not just because I have spent time there, but because it is a nice looking tartan

My opinion is that your first tank should be a "family" tartan (if you have a connection to it).. Of course, what do I know....

Barry is the family name and being Irish we don't have true family tartans but for some reason the Gordon Dress comes up when I do a search for my sir name. but I think the Cork or Land of Enchantment may be the way to go.

IMHO
I would go for the County Cork, that is a very striking tartan, and it would certainly be original, unless of course you are a Gordon, then go for the family tartan.

You should be able to trace your family back to a particular county of Ireland. If Cork is it, than cool. If not, maybe you have another option you haven't found yet.

I had never seen either before you post, but they are both great looking tartans. The gordon will be available through companies like USA Kilts or Canadian Casual kilts that offer PV (and wool), or through companies that offer Stillwater like kilts. That option will always be open in the Gordon tartan, but these other two tartans are limited so they may be a good option for a traditional kilt.

I believe I would go with the NM Tartan. It would be a great ice breaker and topic of discussion since you live in that area. Others would be very interested to see it and it would provide an easy context for them to relate to.
