    Perhaps,

I am jaded and cynical, who knows. Yet I find myself not getting the compliments on being Kilted like I used to. I go to various places around town, and to different areas of the western US and nothing is ever said.

Should I be jealous of all the compliments you guys get?

Perhaps it is just old hat to me that I really don't hear the compliments, I mean after all these years.

While I have not been kilted for years, I do find that most of the time I am out and about, its pretty much a "non-event". I have had 2 people give me complements on my kilt and oddly both on the same day! I think alot of people just don't really know how to talk to strangers anymore and thats the sad part but a byproduct of a bad part of our society.

I think it just means your kilts are all old and everyone is bored with them. You need to go out and get a few new tartans

Seriously though, you probably just don't notice comments as much after all these years.

Maybe kilts are getting old and you should send your kilts to me...

I think that the reaction that you are getting is what it should be.

I wear the kilt full time. I don't wear pants! I wear the kilt everywhere that I go! By far the most common reaction that I get is NO REACTION!

My kilt, and me being kilted are accepted! Isn't that what we want?

It's what I want! I'm comfortable wearing the kilt, and the people around me are comfortable with me being kilted!

    I like it that way!

I'd say I only get a compliment one time in ten that I'm out and about in kilt.

Reminds me of when I was a young teacher - I used to hear the most intricate and outlandish student excuses. In fact other teachers suggested I write the best excuses down - they said that after a while I just wouldn't hear them any more. Something about the look in the sage old veteran's eye seemed to discourage the "dog ate my CD with my term paper on it" stuff.

So where am I going with all this? I dunno maybe I just like the story and wanted to tell it again - no that's not exactly it - It could just be that as you get more comfortable in a kilt, everyone else senses that its no big deal to you so its no big deal to them. Ok, on second thought, I guess I just wanted to tell that story again.

I've noticed the same thing Gman. In my little town I'm guessing its because most folks are used to me kilted now. But on the road in other places I'm guessing its because we're so used to wearing a kilt we look at ease, comfortable, and natural in it so it doesn't seem as "unusual" to others.

And, I've noticed that when people do compliment my kilt now they tend to come closer before they speak to me, and men seem to offer a handshake as they do.

Somewhere there's a doctoral thesis for someone on human behavior and kilts.

And what's fun for me is to be at a Highland Games and give a few compliments myself for a beautiful tartan or well sewn kilt.

This situation is quite normal in Scotland as the kilt is nothing new and the kilt is regarded as nothing more than what a Scot would wear, should he choose to do so.The rare comments that are passed are almost invariably from tourists.I am sorry to have to point this out to some of you ,but if you insist on wearing the kilt as a costume for everyday/evening wear, you will get yourself noticed and then the comments will follow.Perhaps that is what some of you want?

I think a big part of it is a person's own subconscious. When a person first goes out in a kilt, there is always that voice in the back of your head saying, "Hey, I'm wearing a kilt." This happens no matter how confident you are, because you are doing something different. Other people notice this, even if they don't realize what they are noticing.

As you wear the kilt more and more, it becomes a common part of your life, so you are no longer broadcasting your presence. Thus, people react to you less.

I do think, as has been suggested, that many of us do like standing out and drawing a bit of attention. I call it my "inner peacock."
