I was with my wife at the fabric store today, and saw a bolt of tartan cloth that I had seen before, it looked like Gordon with a red stripe added. I had just seen that tartan on a wool coat at a garage sale a few weeks ago, and knew I had seen it before. I looked at the end of the bolt, which informed me that the material was "Black Watch Tartan"

Rocky has it listed as Farquharson. Guess Black Watch was easier to spell.

Not that the material would have been viable for anything kilt related, but still.

I saw an interesting tartan at Hancock Fabrics that also said Black Watch. Maybe that is the new tern for "plaid".

I've actually heard the "Original" BW tartan had a red stripe in it.

Sometimes I tell athletes on a really serious budget to go to Joannes' , find some that's sort of substantial that's "plaid" and pleat it into a "kilt". They can get out the door for $15, spend three hours on a sewing machine and have a "kilt".

Oh, I bought my pincushion, pins and stuff there. And I will buy cotton/poly twill, and liner material there. Aside from that, though....forget it.

There is a Black Watch tartan (as opposed to the Black Watch tartan) that has a red stripe. It is sometimes called "Coarse" tartan or "Regimental Stripe". I can't tell unless I see it though - which dept in JoAnn's was it in?

In my living history group, it is sometimes recomended to get tartan for great kilts at places like Joannes. The tartans aren't anything registered, of course, but 1600's Highlanders didn't exactly concern themselves with that- not to mention the fact that the cloth is often double width, and lightweight, which is a deffinate advantage on those 100 F days in Colorado.
