Question A question for the group.

I'm not sure if I'm listing this question in the right spot or not but can someone help me with what the difference is between a clan commissioner, deputy commissioner and convener? How do their responsibilities differ?

I know that there are a lot of you out there that are presently serving their clan in one of these roles, so I thought I would ask and get some first hand information to my question. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Slainte!

It really depends upon the makeup of the clan society and how their by-laws are written. The easiest to answer is the convener. This is a person who convenes a clan tent at the highland games. A commissioner usually is a regional rep for the clan. Large clans might have multiple district commissioners in a particular region. Now all of these folks might convene a clan tent. In my clan society, it is mostly the commissioners that convene the tents, but we have had a few regular members to convene as well. But we are a small society. It could vary, but I would guess that commissioners in most cases are appointed by the officers of the society.

    Responsibilities:

Convener is uaually responsible for one event.

District Commissioner might be responsible for a state.

Regional Commissioner might be responsible for a group of states (Southeast, Northwest, Mid-West,...)

I hope that somewhere in there you found something helpful.

Heath Bar has pretty much said it all-- in the final analysis it comes down to increased areas of responsibility in the organization and governance of the far-flung outposts of the clan.

In our clan society, a convenor covers a particular state or states, while a Commissioner covers a larger region, like the Midwest, etc. As Heath and Rathdown have stated, it really depends on the clan society itself and its choice of terminology.

Heathbar pretty much nailed it--check with your clan for specific responsibilities. For Clan MacLaren Society of North America, we have:

Clan Officers and Council: President, Vice Pres., Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Immediate Past President, Asst. Sec/Treas., Quartermaster

    Commisioners: Responsible for regions

Covenors: can be responsible for one event or several--they could even presumably handle these activities for a state.

We also have A Webmaster, Genealogist, Legal Counsel and Registered Agent.

Pretty much what they all said

In Clan Mackay USA however we do not use the term Convenor, but instead we have State Commissioners (like myself) who convened/hosted a clan booth at our local games.

The Commissioners are over seen by a Regional Vice-President, who over sees a group of states.

Then over them you have the National V.P. / Chief of Commissioners, followed in turn by the Nat'l President.

    Hope that helps.
