    Regional themes

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread about incorporating
things such as local textiles, symbols, and styles into ones outfit.

For example, as a Floridian (and that means I'm also a Southerner),
I might place some feathers of the Florida scrub jay in my bonnet,
or perhaps wear a sporran made from the hide of an American alligator.
Maybe I'll wear a shirt or kilt made of some material that's popular in the South.

I think you get the idea.
Isn't it amazing how food can sound so good just by having absolutely no clue of what it is?

You might want to check your laws on this one. Especially is this is your state bird. I wouldn't want to run into any Florida W&F officers wearing these.

It is endemic to Florida, but not the state bird,
our state bird is actually the Mockingbird.
as far as I know, it's conservation status is 'vulnerable.'
So far, I haven't seen anything about their feathers.

In memory of my last dog, I commissioned Turpin to make a full mask woodchuck sporran.
If I had the time (and a loom), I would like to dye some wool with dyes made from local materials, and then weave it into tartan yardage.
I am easily moved for sympathy for dogs, far more so than for humans, because dogs do not understand. There is no way to explain that you will return, that the vet will make it all better, that they cannot go shooting today because that is not what today is about. They cannot work out that their misery is finite and will some time end, and so their misery is magnified.

Wompet, I did not explain this well, what I'm trying to say is:
Themes based on one's area, Scottish diaspora merging their local tradition and culture with Scottish tradition.
    My bad.

Why didn't I just that earlier? *facepalm*

I wear a replica Iowa veteran's badge as a kilt pin on my Iowa tartan kilt, in honour of my g-g-great grandfather, who served with Crocker's Iowa Brigade in the Civil War.

    The badge simply says "Iowa".

    Regards,

    Todd

I wear the Colorado state tartan kilt. I have a dirk made entirely of locally harvested material (except for the blade). One of these days, I'll find a hunter with some hair-on deer hide leather that I can use to make a sporran. I already have some bunny hide that I'm using. It should be done this weekend. Is that the kind of thing we're talking about? I am a proud Colorado Scot- American Highlander! I may have to get some mountain pictures taken tomorrow of me in my Colorado kilt. I'll post them in this thread.

    * I should start all my posts with, "I rarely wear a kilt." *
I wear a Buzz Kidder canvas kilt which has ties to Arizona. It is also 100% cotton. Not the best kilt material wrinkle wise, but that's cotton. My family has ties to cotton farming, and I have plenty of childhood memories of that.

I have a bear paw pin made by a Zuni artist, in Zuni sterling overlay style, that I put on a swatch of Bear tartan and wear as a kilt pin with the cotton kilt (or it could be used as a cap badge). All of this has multiple layers of deep regional and personal meaning that is tied to New Mexico and Arizona, and my life.

    I'll... leave out the details.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

If it wasn't that our provincial tartan was ugly as sin, I'd consider it. Otherwise...local imagery.....hmmmm....
