Row stops Scotlands big bash in the big apple

The annual Dressed to Kilt fashion show held as part of Tartan Week in New York has been cancelled next year.
US based charity, Friends of Scotland announced today that the show will not go ahead for 2012.
The charity has ended its relationship with Dr. Geoffrey Scott Carroll who was the chairman and co host of the event but would not say why.
Dr. Carroll has filed an action with the United States Patent Office against FoS, to try and take ownwership of the trademark and service mark 'Dressed to Kilt'. The case is ongoing.

The report in all Scottish papers today states that the event has only been called off for 2012 and will return

    Curious.

I hope it does come back, I have been secretly yearning to get some of my work in the show.

While I'm not always crazy with the results of each show, I love the concept of the whole program.

I agree. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend a show back in 2008 - it was a fantastic time, and I was able to meet a lot of interesting people. A good mate of mine is a fashion designer and owns her own company in lower Manhattan (Tribeca-Soho area; W. Broadway and Chambers - near Ground Zero), and is invited to a lot of these kinds of events. I wore my kilt, naturally.

Let's hope they bring the show back...

I was there last year and had a good time. Though I had to come to terms with the fact that the event has more to do with fashion than it does Highland dress.

A bit of a change of subject, my apologies, but looking at the photo in the link brings to mind something I've often noticed. Celebrities always wear their kilts too long. Oft times well below the knee. As one comment on the article said "turning it into a frock". You would think at an event of this nature someone could advise them on the proper wearing.
Look at Scottish guys wearing kilts - you could look at them and laugh, but the way they carry themselves, how can you? If you believe in it, that's what makes it cool.Andre Benjamin - American Rapper (formerly known as Dre) Songwriter and Musician

Re: Row stops Scotlands big bash in the big apple

The gentleman standing with me in the photo I posted above from last year's Dressed to Kilt is Bob Currie, president of the Clan Currie Society. He asked me to forward along this information he found in the Scotsman. Apparently, the "show must go on" (albeit under a different name).

    To Whom It May Concern,
It is true that the relationship between the founders and producers of the Dressed to Kilt charity event and the Friends of Scotland organization has come to an end . We worked very successfully together for a number of years and the Friends of Scotland organization was the beneficiary of our charitable efforts. They have now made it clear that they will not be involved in any way in a 2012 event. The Founders, Chairmen, Producers, Co-Hosts, Stylists, Hosting Committee Members and many of the models, designers, sponsors, honorary chairmen and business partners who created and produced nine years of successful Dressed to Kilt events are still in place and are planning a 10th Anniversary Show under the title, “From Scotland With Love – Celebrating 10 Years of Scottish Talent, Creativity and Style". And this year, given the ending of our relationship with the Friends of Scotland we have turned our attentions back home and funds from this year’s show will be going to benefit “Cash for Kids” the charity supported by Sir Tom Hunter and now headed by former First Minister Lord McConnell. Indeed, we anticipate that our 10th anniversary show will be the most successful ever.

It is unfortunate that sometimes individuals who are otherwise reasonable human beings and former colleagues can fall out over certain issues where both sides do not see eye to eye. Our request for the cancellation of the trademark is a matter of principal and does not involve a request for any money. Our goal is , always has been, and will remain, to promote Scotland as a country, its culture, its talent, creativity and innovation and the age old Scottish values of education, exploration and enlightenment. In these difficult economic times for so many people we want to refocus our efforts so that the next generations of Scots get the opportunity to make their contributions to those areas and further Scotland’s reputation as the best little country in the world. Peter Morris and I will together answer any questions that you might have regarding this situation.

    With kindest regards,
