If I may be presumptuous enough to assign roles to the Royal Family, in that generation Andrew is the action-oriented daring-do stud "with the Robert Redford good looks" (quote from Prince Charles) and Edward is the late-life baby brother of the family who sort of never had a role if only because they were all taken. He is probably the least known of all of them. Don't want to give the impression I'm a close follower of the whole show, but I'm actually glad to hear he's getting out a bit.

Whilst it is common to see the Dukes of Rothesay and Edinburgh kilted I cannot remember seeing (m)any of either the Duke of York or the Earl of Wessex so attired.

But as it is a highland games event one would hope that the Earl does attend kilted and I am sure that this would be very well received.

As for William and Harry, they currently appear to be lost causes for kilts, don't think I have seen kilted pictures of them since they were little.

William may well have to think again when he becomes Prince of Wales and Duke of Rothesay because he will then be more subject to protocol than he is now.

HRH The Earl of Wessex is wearing the Balmoral tartan which is reserved for the exclusive use of the Royal family and those who the Queen allows to wear it. It was designed by HRH Prince Albert, consort to HRM Queen Victoria.

Hmm I couldn't help but notice the color of his leathers. Is he mixing browns and blacks? Must have taken a queue from The Prince Of Wales.

Brian K is absolutely correct re the Balmoral Tartan being restricted to the Royal family. I believe that even members of that family have to get the Queens permission to wear it. To my knowledge the only outsider that has been given permission by the Queen to wear it, is her personal piper

Sandy, is there any chance that you could post those pictures of Prince Edward over to the thread where highlanders are discusing highland attire(some thing like that !)? These pictures illustrate perfectly the way that we wear the kilt over here in that situation. I must say, for a part time kilt wearer the Prince wears the kilt well.

Yes his sporran is brown, his shoes black. All perfectly correct, and very traditional. I do not think he learned this from his eldest brother.
