Saffron Kilt - what are the correct accoutrement?

I have decided to go 'troppo' (or whatever the equivalent is in a cold climate). Two of my kilts have been ravaged by moths, I took them to a Belfast kilt maker to see if they could be repaired. No luck but they offered me a very good deal on a Saffron kilt which I accepted.

I intend to wear it with piper green hose brogues with a tongue and buckle (DIY job) a brown leather sporran, brown leather belt with brass snake buckle and an argyle jacket (black for evening and green tweed for day). Any comments?

What about:

Flashes?

Sgian dhu?

Kilt pin?

Green shamrock patches? Although I am badged to the Rangers in the cadet force I would definitely not be putting badges on it.

I suggest the tartan read flashes, kind of scarlet red I think; green hose sound good.

I'm not sure you need a sgian dubh unless it is of good quality.

I suggest a blanket pin, giant safety pin, and worn a third of the way up the apron.

I don't know anything about shamrock badges.

I have several sgian dhu. A silver mounted regimental one, a bone day job and a snakeshead skien brew - its more a question of whether its a appropiate with a saffron kilt.

The tailor thought red flashes or saffron ones but she was not sure.

I don't recall reading anything about a sgian dubh not being propper to wear with a traditional looking kilt of any sort; I could be wrong. I think the main problem is with cheap plastic ones.

I would suggest the silver mounted sgian dubh, except that you have the brass buckle.

I don't know, I never wor one because I don't have a sgian dubh.

I have a 4 yd box pleat Saffron kilt, for my tropical kilt.. but then I live in a very warm climate.. its not uncommon to have the entire summer months in an excess off 100f (38c+). For some reason, with my Saffron, yellow really sets off well with it. I have some lovat green shooting socks with yellow dicing on top, that I really like. (actually they are mustard) but worn with a golden shirt, I like it. I have red, yellow, green, and sage traditional garters, to wear with my hose.. I tend to lean more to the red, just because of the red and yellow is significant to my military service. I have seen the buckle brogues on Irish pipers and I really like that look myself. If I can find a pair reasonably priced, I would like a them for myself. The Brown or black belt and sporran, both look great with the kilt. I like the browns myself, but the black looks great with the Irish military kilts. I have touted with the idea of getting a black Kilkenny jacket and waistcoat for my more formal events, they are topped with the Harp buttons, in either brass or silver. I have a Lovat Green tweed waistcoat, but I want a Charcoal tweed jacket, for my casual wear. I have plans on a contemporary jacket and waistcoat in brown to add some depth, to my wardrobe. As for the pin and such, I think that would be a personal issue, I am not real big on the Shamrock topped pins and sgians, but others are.. My family is from the ROI and I have always been told the Harp is a more approriate symbol. I, personally, have a Maid of Erin Harp broach (sans the crown), I wear this on my caubeen. I usually do not wear a sgian, but I am looking for a working mans model, based on the gralloch, for the times, its more appropriate to wear one.

I would think any of the following would work.

1. Brown shirt, oatmeal hose. brown flashes, brown sporran and belt, brass /gold buckle, kilt pin, brown shoes.

2. Navy shirt, hose with saffron flashes, brown belt, sporran,shoes, metal accents in brass

3. Black shirt and hose with red or saffron/yellow flashes, black leather accouterments, accented by silver pin, buckle, etc. .

4. Bottle green shirt and hose with saffron flashes (I think red or kelly green would work too.) your choice of brown or black leather, with brass or silver accordingly. I myself am parcial to the brown and brass though.

For a jacket perhaps black Argyll or one of the classic Irish jackets. Brown or Green would work too.

For a hat I would definatly go with the Irish Caubeen in the contrasting color.

I don't think I better try to get into the formal attire and leave that to someone
who is more knowledgeable in that area.

I'm sure I've missed something so i ask your pardon for the omission.


Just some thoughts as a Saffron Kilt is in my future too.
