    Scottish Tartans Society/Scottish Tartans Authority

Looking into Stewart tartans, I came across two different organisations that seem to register tartans: the Scottish Tartans Society and the Scottish Tartans Authority. Does either of these have more legal or moral authority than the other? Do they cooperate or compete? Is one more aligned with reasearch and the other more with commerce?

    Is this a controversial topic?

    Just wondering.

IIRC, one is now defunct, and the other maintains the database, but it's been a while since I cuaght up on all that. I think Matt Newsome has a page on that stuff at albanach.org

    That would be this article:

    http://www.albanach.org/official.htm

Should answer all of your questions.

Todd, you may not know everything, but you seem to know where to find everything.

The Scottish Tartans Society still has a web site, so somebody is paying the bills. It appears than nobody is maintaining it, though, since the link to the newest issue of the Journal is from 2000.

You've pretty much summed up what it is to be a reference librarian, Ron, in that first sentence!

    Cheers,
