    Shorts not kilt in Lanzarote

Just back from great holiday in the Canary island of Lanzarote.
This time after seeing someone kilted one evening the last time I was there, I decided that I would take one of my light weight kilts.
Now I have worn the kilt all over the world in various countries and always enjoy wearing it and do so with pride but somehow I thought it was too inappropriate to wear in a holiday isle with very high temperatures.
Certainly during the day, it was a case of shorts, I have never really worn the kilt in such high temperatures and I was unsure whether the kilt would have been too warm even being commando.
Anyway, here was an experience kiltie who loves wearing the kilt chickening out of kilt wearing for the first time in his life. I just could not see me strolling along the promenade in the evening and going into pubs and restaurants kilted, yet I do that without hesitation in Scotland
Sorry fellow members for admitting this indiscretion

    Hi Jimmy,

You are not the only one here who has said that it was too hot for a kilt. I wonder if it down to what an individual can stand or an actual temperature. I know that in high summer, I have always been glad of my kilt, but unfortunately we just don't get the consistent high temperatures here in the UK to be able to do a proper study. Or I wonder if high humidity has something to do with it?

More questions than answers, I fear.

    Regards

    Chas

We had our Highland games last week. My intent, is usually to stay the day and even go out for a drink with the athletes afterward.

We stayed for only about 3 hours in the 87*F heat (30.5* C). It was absolutely oppressive. I did get a new sporran and sgian dubh, so the day wasn't a wash.

I can sympathize, Jimmy. I have a residence in the Caribbean, which is pretty much just due west of the Canaries (and was populated by many colonists from there).
I have gone kilted, but there is no way in Hoboken that I would wear a woolen kilt there. It's a locale where a synthetic fabric is a must.

This is why every one of us should have a USAK casual on hand...

    Lightweight PV

For general kickabout, a casual PV from Skye Highland Outfitters has been great. And even though they get royally abused here I have an old sportkilt that is fine for just wearing on the beach.

This is the reason I'm glad that Marten Mill weaves tartan in PV! My PV kilts are great for wear in the Colorado summer- which is hot, but dry. In the hot and dry, PV is great.

Oh, and in hot and damp, steamy weather even better!
