So, Do You Wanna Play the Pipes?

I'll try and keep this one short.

At church this Sunday, we had a Celtic music service, the height of which was Jim McDonnell from the HIgh Desert Pipe and Drum Band, who played several pieces on the pipes.

I had never met Jim before, but as I walked into church he immediatley picked me out as someone to talk to. At the musical directors request, I was wearing my ancient Lindsay, Green hose, green sweater, and a black Balmoral.

I have often been asked, "So do you play the pipes?", but Jim poised another question, "So, since you are comfortable wearing a kilt, do you want to learn the pipes?" I have never been so approached. I am quite honored. I the spirit in which the offer was made I dedicated my piece to the HIgh Desert Pipe and Drum Band band. I sang "Danny Boy" in a high clear tenor, and the truth be know the pipes may be calling.

Way cool story. I wish I could find the time/money to learn the pipes. Definitely on my life's to-do list.

Brooster, it ain't easy. It takes a lot of time and effort. I think I have a passable version of Highland Cathedral... That's my favorite piece, and I've been putting a lot of effort into learning it.

Learning the pipes takes real dedication and commitment. For me, it has been a source of satisfaction and accomplishment. Highland Cathedral is also my favorite. Have you heard on the recording "The Spirit of the Glen?"

I'm told you can't teach yourself... Well, you can but you'll never be a good piper if you do so you definately need a good tutor. Sounds like you've found one so you're already ahead of the game.

Best of luck with that venture mate. What do family and neighbours think about it? If you haven't told them yet they'll soon find out.

If this gentleman is to be your tutor, consult with him before doing anything. Ask him what practice chanter to use, cost of tutoring, etc. Also check out the sticky on the Celtic Musicians forum by BeloitPiper. It has very sound advise from the piping community here on XMTS.
I am a beginner on the practice chanter, and am spending at least an hour a day on the practice exercises. The progress is slow, and the work is hard, but the rewards are very worthwhile. After three months, I am progressing to tune work. My tutor is just starting me on Bruce's Address (a slow march), and Amazing Grace (a slow air). The detail and timing of embellishments is very important to the success of the music, and the work on them is tedious.
As a real old ____, if I can do it, you can as well.
There are many Pipers In Training on the board.

Whether you do or do not, the time will pass anyway as will the resources. The only question is what will you be when they have passed? You really owe it to yourself to take a stab at it. $200 will cover your practice chanter and first few lessons. If you don't like it, at least the practice chanter has resale value.

I guess I forgot to tell you all the best part of the offer. The lessons and the practice chanter are gratis. So other than the BS&T there really is no reason not too... I sing fairly well, play passable guitar, why not the pipes?
