So I wore a kilt to my wife's Christmas party

Everything went well at the beginning. Was wearing the Gordon PV with black dress shirt, black hose, black flashes and my waistcoat, open. Similar to my avatar. A bit more modern.

Got a lot of double takes. A few "are you wearing a kilt?", a couple "Where are you bag pipes?" (which in turn got a "Do you really want me to show you them?), and a bunch of complements.

Than I got the oh so subtle "Look, that guy is wearing a dress!!" I looked at him and calmly asked "Pardon me?" He replied "You're wearing a dress." I answered back "A kilt." his reply was "I know what you call it." I just turned my back and did my best to ignore him the rest of the night.

Now even if it were an option punching a guy int the nose isn't me. Not a very violent person. Also wouldn't like to be arrested or sued. Add on to that the guy is husband to one of my wife's co-workers so it would add an additional amount of tension to the work day for her, this woman is not one of my wife's favorites.

Any other way you guys would have handled it?

You could manage a very distasteful expression, and ask him if he really thought it was acceptable to walk up to people and make rude remarks. Then, turn away without waiting for a response.

I generally answer less than subtle comments with less than subtle comments of my own. I stop very short of starting fights or anything, but if someone's in the mood to hurl insults, they learn pretty quick I'm not the guy they should be targeting. People in general leave me alone though, and most comments are made out of simple ignorance.

You got to feel sorry for your wife's co-worker who has to suffer her ignorant jerk of a husband 24/7. You and your wife have much to be thankful for.

The problem with the ignorant is that they almost universally believe they are not. But this guy is obviously ignorant AND obnoxious.

You handled it well, but it is unfortunate that you had to handle it at all.

I've been trying to find a good situation to use the line : "Obviously your parents didn't get around to having that 'little talk' with you when you were a kid, did they? Too bad." Feel free to use it if it looks like you can use it to shut the next @$$#*!€ down.

Depending on whether the guy was trying to joke around, or was just plain being obnoxious for the pure joy of being obnoxious..

Or just give him the finger and get on with the rest of the evening.

I have to admit, I'd have corrected him on the dress thing, too. Geez, can't that guy tell the difference between a dress and a skirt? If he can't, then he shouldn't be hurling insults like that and getting them wrong while he's being huffy about it.
