    Soccer Club Tartan Dispute

It would appear that Tartan/Kilt Mania might be spreading among football (soccer) supporters well to the south of the Scottish Border if this thread from the Plymouth Argyle Football Club Supporters message board is anything to go by. In order to understand the dispute about which tartan to adopt, one needs to know that the City of Plymouth is on the Devon side of the border between the Counties of Devon and Cornwall, but also attracts many Cornish supporters.

I'm gonna confuse every one tonight by cheering England and wearing my kilt.

    Al,

I love your iconoclastic attitude! Keep kilted and keep them guessing, it truly is great.

Guess I'll just lounge around in a solid kilt, drink a few beers, and watch baseball. Issue averted!

Don't know what the fuss is all about with regards to the Cornish Tartan... there is actually a Devon Tartan.. and as Argyle are in Devon thats got to be first choice!!!!"

    Plymouth Argyle...

Hmm...I wonder if the name refers to the group of Royal Marines from the HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales that joined up with some Argyll-Sutherland Highlanders in Malaya in 1941 and fought the Japanese? They are sometimes called The "Plymouth Argylls". If that is the case, then I would say the Government tartan that the A & S wears would be appropriate, and fairly easy to obtain.

I am sorry to disappoint you, but the name comes from the fact that the club was founded following a meeting of backers at a house in Argyle Terrace in Plymouth, so there is no connection with any clan or regiment.

    Which one, Phil?

Which one, Phil? The Plymouth Argylls or Argyle Terrace?
