Some more do's and don'ts on the board

    Hi, folks!

Having been posting and watching for over a year now, I thought I'd put up my take on what I see regarding posting, with newbies in mind in particular.

    Do's

    1. Say "well done", and often. It takes little to be polite and encourages folks to post, especially beginners. It's the cyber way of smiling at the grocery store!

    2. Post links where possible as we all like to check out the results of your ferreting. Looking at stuff away from X Marks can be just as interesting as reading our threads, well, nearly!

    A middling thing

    1. Without your contributions, the board will stagnate. As in life, even a one-liner can keep a conversation going.

    Don'ts

    1. Never bring up 19th Century Scottish history, especially in relation to royalty. It's a minefield of opinion and can quickly divide the members into those who choose to ignore the political background, itself off limits, and those for whom it is central to their kilt-wearing. Just DON'T GO THERE!

    2. Bear in mind that others' opinions are just as valid as your own, unless they're falling foul of the usual big no-nos like racism, sexism, homophobia etc. And, leave it to the Mods to deal with transgressors.

I think this conversation should be kept going, so I am adding a one-liner.

    LOL!

I find this website a whole lotta fun and full of interesting conversations. I'm also acutely aware that there are some unwritten rules outside of the ones mentioned in what you sign up to by becoming a member. Hey, we're all entitled to our opinions, but we need to be mindful that others are not as aware as some on certain subjects, and that's fine. Even those that know those subjects well, from varying camps, are entitled to disagree.

I've learnt to bottle my thoughts and preferences on a variety of subjects as they're not deemed suitable for discussion. So long as moderation is dealt out even-handedly, that's okay by me. Overall, I think the Mods do a good job.

I'd rather post up this thread and chivvy folks to be encouraging to each other. There are plenty of specialists forums, or should that be fora (?), if you want to get into the role of the landed gentry in 19th Century Scotland, royalty vs republicanism, the Act of Proscription etc. As I said before, many of us have strong opinions on these subjects, but they're best left on your bookshelf, and quite rightly so.

    So, onwards and upwards!

Good comments, Stratherrick. A thoughtful thread for newbies and not a bad reminder for us Elders, either!

I am all for courtesy and common sense and yes, we do veer off those tracks on a rare occasion, but more rules and conventions on an already fairly stringently ruled website could stifle our learning processes and fun to a terminal decline.Best let sleeping dogs lie, is my suggestion.

Important point, Jock, but I think can be a good idea to have a reminder of where those sleeping dogs lie, lest someone inadvertently step on a tail in the dark... and before you know it the whole kennel is howling.
