Sooooo, why don't more Scots wear kilts?

As best I can tell from the last attempt at getting an answer to this perplexing question is that few Scots wear kilts because they can't afford one.

Did you know that a top of the line custom made Cowboy hat made of undied fur from the silver belly of a Beaver can cost upwards of $1000 American? That's why damned near every Texan has a Cowboy hat made of mixed fur felt, or (gasp) even straw.

If Scots would consider doing what we Texans have done then every Scot would be able to afford a kilt. Beaver Fur Cowboy Hat equals Sheeps Wool Kilt, thus Straw Cowboy Hat equals Poly-viscose Kilt.

Frankly, a Straw Cowboy hat is damned more comfortable than the Silver Belly Hat anyway ... Texans are OK with settling for Straw Hats, maybe Scots would be OK with Poly kilts too.

At least more Scots might get to enjoy the best of their national dress ...
just like we Texans do with our hats. The Cowboy Hat is the best part of the modern Cowboy outfit, I'm thankful I don't have to wear the whole damned outfit and a $1000 hat to be free to enjoy simply wearing a Cowboy Hat.

As best I can tell the kilt itself is the best part of the modern kilt outfit ... why not adopt a cheaper version of the kilt so that more people could enjoy wearing it. It's OK, really. History and Heritage are not diminished by modern adaptations of traditional garb.

Texas is still TEXAS, straw hats and all.

    Yeee Hawwwwww!

Criss makes a good point, and I would guess that's one of the reasons why we've heard people say that they've seen more kilts in Scotland lately.

Yes, the kilt could be worn more often in Scotland if cheap non-wool kilts like the small but splendid batch of acryllic kilts which Union Kilts recently issued become more readily available. The acryllic kilt looks convincing as a real kilt; all it needs is leather for the straps. But I can't see the lightweight polycotton kilts catching on, as although I do occasionally wear them casually because they are very comfortable (no scratchy wool - and I'm already conditioned to wearing lightweight polycotton trousers,) IMHO the polycotton kilts don't look quite right as they are too light and so they don't swing correctly. They are too much like old fashioned schoolgirl kilted skirts rather than proper kilts for the mainstream male population to want to wear them.
