| | Start 'em out young!
My office adjoins that of the planetarium in the Science Building here on campus, and every day we have school groups of all ages passing by my door.
This morning, as I walked down the hall, a group of three young boys--first or second graders--looked at me and one said, "why are you wearing a dress?" Well, I gave the lads a quick explanation, including where Scotland was.
As I turned to go down the stairs, one of their mothers emerged from the women's restroom and the one who had asked the question in the first place ran to her, excitedly, "Momma, I want a kilt!" (That's another one for us! )

I would love to have an office next to a planetarium!
I have always been an astronomy enthusiast, and I got married (wearing a kilt, of course) in the Minneapolis Planetarium, which was attached to the main downtown Minneapolis Public Library. After a nice civil ceremony under the dome, the lights were turned down and our guests got a private planetarium show. I have enjoyed visiting that planetarium since I was a little kid, it was recently torn down.
There is a picture of us in the June 2003 Sky and Telescope magazine standing next to the planetarium projector. It also was noted in the library newsletter that it was the only wedding ever held there.

Astronomy enthusiast, eh? You might be interested in another forum that I frequent: http://www.bautforum.com/
BAUT (Bad Astronomy and Universe Today) Forum. It's a collaboration between Dr. Philip Plait (an astronomer working at Sonoma Univrsity) and Fraiser Cain (a Canadian astronomy buff). Fun, family-friendly place. Good place to ask questions and to just shoot the breeze.
And now we return you to your regularly-scheduled thread...
Longshadows: Good on you! One at a time, eh?

That's the way to do it!
Unfortunately, even at Scottish festivals, I don't see that many boys with kilts. Too bad. I think parents don't realize just how many years of wear they can actually get out of a boy's kilt, since the straps adjust & boys' kilts have hems that can be let out as they grow. And then the kilts can be passed on to a younger brother or cousin.
Keep up the educating--it's needed.
