Stillwater kilt lengths and styles
Okay....I am on the Stillwater Kilt site and this stuff looks great and I love the prices. I will get the Standard acrylic, looks really good....I just have two questions:
1. Are the Blackwatch and Nightstalker tartans both "non-clan" so regular people can wear them? Oh...regular people...what am I talking about.... So non-Scottish people can wear them? I know, everyone said I can wear any tartan I want to but I don't want to get into trouble, that's just the sort of person I am.
2. I see these things only come in ONE LENGTH and I got out the tape measure and 24 inches will work GREAT for me....but how do some of you shorter guys handle this? I can't see you putting the waist up at your armpits so I was just curious....

You won't get into trouble. Forget about it.

Some people hem them. Others just hoist the waistline up. Believe it or not, the military kilts have their top edge at the ribcage.

The "Blackwatch" is actually deep in Scottish history. It's a military tartan. Run a Google on it, and you'll find a wealth information on the tartan as well as the Black Watch military unit. But, seriously, there shouldn't be any worries about wearing a Scottish tartan and not being of Scottish heritage. All I would recommend is at LEAST knowing what clan the tartan belongs to and maybe a brief history on it. But that's all my little tunnel visioned opinion.
The Nightstalker tartan is a SWK invention. I'm sure you would thoroughy enjoy that one. I have it with the matching hose flashes and LOVE it.
As far as the lenght... as stated before... some hem, others (myself included) just hoist her up high on the belly and carry on with business
I'm really enjoying your passionate interest in all of this...

The Nightstalker is a fashion tartan available only from Stillwater, thus ANYBODY can wear it as it has NO clan affiliation, or a district one for that matter.
You seem awfully worried about getting in trouble for wearing a certain tartan. Relax, very few people will even know what tartan you are wearing. Just know what a tartan represents if you wear it and wear it with honor and pride.

Enjoy the Stillwater kilts. They're a great value and their service is without equal.

Overly concerned, I think. If one is that timid about wearing a tartan, I can't help wonder if one has what it takes to wear a kilt at all.

Yes, I was thinking that as well.
I decided that I was already going to be fighting one battle just wearing a kilt in the first place and didn't want to further complicate things by having some tartan that would cause a public outrage.
However, much of this is because I am thinking about this too much because the kilt is not yet in my hands.
Typically in life I decide on a course of action and then I take it immediately because otherwise this is what happens, my mind goes wild and thinks up 1000 different possible outcomes because I cannot move forward.

I have two SW kilts. I put off ordering anything like them for many years because I was spoiled by the "tanks" that I have worn since first I started wearing the kilt. I will tell you this much,
I have no complaints about the SW kilts, I ordered them both with the flyplaids and wore them with no problem to some very fancy restaurants and pubs. The only difference that I could feel and worried about was the weight of the SW kilts but there was no need to worry, the kilts stayed in place and look damn good.
I wear the Macleod Tartan which make up my "tanks" but I ordered first the Nightstalker and then the Black Stewart a couple weeks later. Don't worry about it, just get whatever you like and enjoy.
Chris.

I'm a traditionalist (I primarily wear tartans) and highland heavy athlete and the SWKs are about all I wear on the games field - they look great, they are really well built and they stand up to a lot of abuse. I recommend them highly for casual wear. The two upper tiers I would recommend for any wear. They look great all the way around.
The length does pose a problem for me, and typically I hem them (I can't wear them too high waisted when I'm competing or they interfere). The lady that hems them for me puts the hem on a tartan line and uses a blind stitch so you'd have to hunt to find out that it was hemmed. (She's a McGregor and knows a thing or twa about kilts and kilties.)
If you like a tartan, with the exception of military tartans (IMO you should qualify to wear those), wear it. If anyone says anything confrontational to you about it tell them to call the tartan police if they don't like it.
A friend of mine, who is a native of Kenya, attended the Triad games a couple of years ago to watch and support. To feel more at home he asked to wear one of my kilts and I put him in my dress MacQueen tank (my mother's tartan). Nobody gave him a second look, much less said anything to him. Oh, and I own a few in tartans that I am not "entitled" to wear - a couple of them bought from Matt Newsome. If he, in his vast knowledge, had no problems with it no one else should either. (Matt - love the new Colqhoun 8 yard, btw! LOL) No worries.
