Surprise from a friend.

One of our friends stopped by the other day and handed me a small book. She said she had discovered it while going through the old bunkhouse, and thought I might enjoy reading it. The leather cover was worn and the binding was loose with several pages in the front and back missing. On the inside cover was the following note, “Artie Clark, Eckley, Curry Co., Oregon.” Underneath the name, a line was drawn, with another note in different handwriting saying, “From Aunt Laura Bradley.” Somebody wrote the name Fred in ink (vs the pencil of the other two) at a later time. The book, “The Scottish Chiefs” by Jane Porter, appears to have been printed in 1831. The original work was printed in 1809. Not sure what edition this would be.

The town of Eckley is gone, however, in the 1830’s/1840’s it would have been at least a day’s ride from its location in the hills to the ranch here on the coast. I find it interesting that this book has been sitting in a bunkhouse all this time.

I discovered Project Gutenberg last year, and have read several of the books in their catalog. However, if given a choice, I much prefer to hold the book in my hand rather than reading it on the screen. That may just be my age, since computers didn't start becoming more than an office tool until I was in my thirties. Although, I must admit the Internet with its ability to deliver vast amounts of information has been one of the greatest advancements of the twentieth century (IMHO.) Being able to peruse a half dozen Foreign newspapers in a matter of a few hours is a tremendous time saver, and of course forums like this one are informative and have become their own communities in virtual space.

Still there is nothing like sitting in a comfortable chair, with book in hand and enjoying the experience with more than just your sight. Well, that's just my view on it,...and that with a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee.
