Texas Tartan Day and SAHG
Friday night was the Tartan Celebration at the Alamo. There was a good crowd there it was a nice ceremony. This was the first time we've gone to this event. 100 of the 179 that died at the Alamo were Scot or of Scottish decent. There was pipe music by the San Antonio Pipes and Drums, a couple of highland dances, and wreath or bouqet laying by the clans/organizations that were there. One of the speakers was a Buchannan that had a great uncle that died at the Alamo. Pics will be posted in the picture forum.
Saturday we went to the San Antonio Highland Games. There were a few more clans represented and a few more vendors than last year. The games seem to grow each year. This was the 10th year and the motto this year is "Twice Proud". I got to meet Steve MacIntyre and we had a good talk. We're going to try to make it to Houston in May to check out their event. The games were pretty good, though the best part was the son of one of the competitors practicing throwing the stone. He was maybe 5 and had found a fairly smooth flat stone that was 2-3 lbs and was chunking it just like his father. He stopped me as I walked past and told me he was practicing throwing the rock. I told him that was great and to keep practicing. Unfortunately, I didn't have the camera when he was doing it. Here is the pic of Steve and me at the Clan MacIntyre tent to prove it happened.
