Threadlock

I was cruising along perusing through older threads that had not been replied to for quite some months. They were all locked. Then suddenly there appeared unlocked threads which had not been replied to for some months. The difference was ONE DAY. I'll be back tomorrow to see if it is accurate to guess that threads left dormant for exactly six month fall into the locked down status.

Suppose it's a topic that needs be revived two days after lock-down and the thread carries significant relevance to the re-emergence of the topic?
It seems to me that it may be somewhat inconvenient for folks to have to track down the thread for answers to new question that are pertinent to the thread?

Don't stop me now. . .

Hi Morrison,

This was debated at some length when the decision was made. In a nutshell, if a thread needs to be revived it can be. So far - no need. Opinions change with the season and certainly after 6 months. If the thread is about data, then there is a 50/50 chance the data will be out of date. If up-to-date opinions or data is required, why rely on old opinions and data?

Regards

Chas

My opinion was and is that this six-month lock policy is good. If you want to refer to an old thread, just link to it.

Before this policy, a newbie would find an old thread in a Google search, and then reply to it. A bunch of other people who missed it on the first go-round then jump in to reply. A link would have been easier.

Understood 'bout linking to the old thread, but then reviving an oldie sure is fun for some like me who don't mind having fewer window pages opened and are less likely to be confused about 'which one do I close' now that I've read them? I kinda like the back button the breadcrumb links and the jump option

And I say tongue firmly in cheek. Does this mean that any thread in the Historical will be locked immediately because it refers to old data?

Yes, of course. In the context of closing threads, immediately equals 6 months.

Chas (who has to paint the shed - "I think, I will do it immediately")
