Thumbs up Today at the Museum

Today I visited our city's pioneer museum, and I unexpectedly saw a kilt and tam in one of the display cases. The tag said it was worn by a somebody Nielson (I could be spelling that wrongly) in 1865

It was deep green with yellow and black, but that's all I know about the tartan.

Anyway, I immediately thought of all of my dear friends at XTMS and I thought I'd share. Just more proof I guess of our deeply rooted Scottish Heritage here in Utah!
I have a fever, and the only prescription is MORE KILT

It would be interesting to try to figure out what tartan that is.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Too bad you couldn't get a picture of it.

If I were to hazard a guess, possibly a MacNeill tartan?

I know, I had the same thought. Maybe if I head back there sometime I'll snap a picture and we can figure it out!

Did it look something like this?

I entered Nielson into the Scottish Tartans Authority and found nothing. I entered Neilson, and didn't get a direct match, but I did get several tartans as references. The above seemed to fit the closest to the name and description. It is called MacNeil (Chief's Sett), AKA Old MacNeil. ITI number 1839. It is dated 1847, and was originally from Wilsons of Bannockburn.

that does look pretty similar, I don't know about the blue, but then again it was pretty faded due to age... Maybe I'll call over there and ask about it. Now I'm very curious!

A kilt in Utah in 1865... that's pretty far west by 1865 standards.

You kind of have to do that now since you've gotten us all curious!
