    Washington DC Area Kilt Stores

Anyone have any idea if / where there are any shops in the greater DC area that carry Scottish accessories / kilts? There is one shop called the Irish Connection but they carry mostly Irish linens and pewter. The Scottish attire section is very small. I can't believe with 5.5 million people here there is not at least one.

(I tried to put this in the Kilt Advice Section but the page wouldn't load.)

There is only one shop that I have found in the greater DC metro area. It is in Old Town Alexandria called The Scottish Merchant and it shares space the John Crouch Tobacconist. They carry a nice selection of kilt accessories and Argyles, but they send their kilt orders out to Lochcarron for manufacture.

The prices are pretty reasonable since you consider that they have to pay rent for a building in Old Town! ;-)

    Here's there info:

    The Scottish Merchant
    215 King Street
    Alexandria VA 22314
    Phone: 703-739-2302

The next closest shop is in Winchester, VA! That's why I've had to do much of my shopping by mail-order or over the Internet.

I did get a batch of kilt-socks from The Scottish Merchant recently and have been very pleased. The lady who runs the kilt side is Doris Swisshelm.

    Hope that helps!

If you want to make a run down there together (since I know exactly where it is) let me know. I'd be happy to meet up with you and head down. I can always use more kilt stuff.

Hey, Glassman, do you have the name of the shop and the location in Winchester? I get up that way occasionally and I'd like to check it out the next time i'm up there.

I looked up their card and saw that I had misremembered. They are actually in Warrenton. The name of the shop is The Scoti and they do have a website at http://www.thescoti.com/ but it is not an ecommerce site.

    Here's the address:

    35 Main Street

When are you going to be up this way? Maybe we should try to hold a kilt meet-up.

Its been 40 years, but I remember old town Alexandria being a hotbed of Scottish shops.

And Williamsburg too...but that's not close.

I'm so jealous...can taste the fresh seafood....smell the wool of the kilts...I do hope old town Alexandria is still as wonderful as it used to be....

There are still lots of good seafood and the rest, but sadly there's only one Scottish shop & one Irish shop left that I know of. But Murphy's Irish Pub is still around and still has live singing/sing-a-long of great bawdy pub tunes late at night!

Yup, I got a nice Lovat Blue Argyll off the rack at The Scottish Merchant, plus a few accessories. I also get my pipe tobacco there as well.

    Gentlemen,

I'm out of the country for Christmas so I missed the replies to this thread so let me respond:

    1. Glassman - Ugh, driving in Old Alexandria is not my most favorite thing to do but if you'd know where the shop is I'm game to go - or go to Warrenton.

    2. I'm also up for a kilt meet-up. There are several of us around here now and we SHOULD get together. We'll be back in NoVA on the evening of the 27th so we can go from there.

Got to sign off now as I have to shower and "kilt-up" for Christmas Eve dinner with my inlaws. (About 22 of them) Should be a nice evening. We're in Canada and I'm not the only kilt wearer in the family. Although these folks seem to reserve them for weddings, funerals and formal military dress. Maybe I can change their minds.

PS. Anyone know of any Scottish shops in Windsor Ontario? Big Paul? You're close, anyone else?

    Merry Christmas,

    Dee
