Weaving Mills

OK, I've just heard of this mill in Scotland: D.C. Dalgliesh, Ltd. They seem pretty reputable, and the web site looks decent enough, albeit a tad limited. They are willing to do a special weave for me in the MacDonagh tartan, 8 yds. Has anyone had experience with this particular mill? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! McD

I've not personally used them, but I've heard nothing but good. They appear to be a mill that is willing to weave material for individual kilts for a reasonable price.

I think Barb T, one of our finest kiltmakers, has said this is her favorite cloth to work with. And Matt Newsome uses it when he orders a custom weave.

I agree. My Newsome Stirling, my BC Clodagh, and my soon-to-be Bonny Heather Galway all are from Dalgliesh. This is the finest wool tartan I have ever seen.

D.C.Dalgleish are very good and produce really wonderful quality fabric. One thing to remember is, and it may seem obvious, they weave almost any and every design in any and every colour, so just make really sure that you and they are communicating well,make sure you get sample colours and check the exact thread count etc.
My experience of working with has been great and am always happy to place an order with them

I have a 35/40 year old kilt of 13-ounce woven by Dalgleish -- still looking and feeling good -- and quite possibly another woven by them, as well. I'm not sure they are still doing so, but they were fine silk weavers, too; my wife has two of his 118-inch sashes with superbly knotted long fringes.

The fabric for my 16 ounce Macdonald of Kingsburgh and my 13 ounce Antarctica tartan kilts were both woven by Dalgliesh. I'm very pleased with both kilts.

Hoping to get a price I can afford from them for the Arizona State Tartan material. Just found out from the designer Dr. Smith, that Dalgliesh has the tartan pattern for it.

My kilt is of that mill's 16oz fabric, and it's great. I had a little concern about scratchiness, chafing, etc...no problem. Very comfortable, and very warm.

I'll echo what everyone has said about the quality of the fabric.

I would recommend ordering through an expert retailer like Matt (M. A. C. Newsome, above) at STM or Rocky at USAK, so you won't have to learn all the intricacies.
