What is it called?

I see these hats in alot of pipe bands, worn by the major. I just don't know what they are called, and I can't seem to find it on the web! Does anyone know?

Calling something that grandiose a "bonnet" seems the epitome of understatements

I've heard them mistakenly called bearskins.

Me too. I guess the two pieces of headgear look similar from a distance to some.

I'm no expert, but the bear skin hats are the ones worn by the guards at Buckingham Palace.

as others have said ... a feather bonnet, here is a wee site i found explaining what type of feathers are mainly used and it has info on other parts of the uniforms accessories
