What I did with damaged Xmarks tartan . . .

    I built a four-yard box pleat kilt!

Here is a review I promised Gordon Kirkbright. I had intended to buy some of the damaged fabric to play around with. I ordered 2 metres to split and try a 4-yard box pleat. This was my second attempt at kilt making. (The first was also a remnant from Fraser and Kirkbright.) My intention was to hem the kilt as I knew the selvedge to be damaged. As it happens, I was lucky and the only real damage was outside of the four yard piece I wanted to use. There were also a few small oil marks, but nothing too much. The material is not perfect, but quite serviceable for trial kilt making.

I modelled the kilt on my Matt Newsome box pleat and modifed the directions in Barb's book. Here is the result. I am quite pleased with it.

So, if anyone wants to chance their luck with a damaged piece of tartan, at a knock-down price, go for it! I never imagined that I would be able to make a kilt. Follow Barb's book, be careful, patient and see what you can do!

That looks really nice and well done on the kilt

Wow, that looks awesome! Okay, you've inspired me. Someday I am going to make myself a kilt. Oh, and the more I see that X-Marks tartan, the more I like it. I'm really impressed.

Very nice indeed you should be proud of that kilt.

Superb job! It'll be quite some time before I attempt kilt making I think, but my hat's off to those of us who do
