Why do we have to justify wearing a kilt?
This has been bothering me for a while and the number of posts I see where people seem to need to justify their reasons for wearing a kilt. Also the number of times I have been asked "Why are you wearing a/your kilt?" I was asked again this evening and could not think of an answer and thought why should I have to have an answer?
Some need to say they are honouring their ancestors/country/tradition/clan etc. etc. Well thats fine if you need or want a reason.
But is there really a need for this justification?
It is an item of clothing, period. No need for any justification, just wear it whenever/however and whatever type of kilt you want.
Next time someone asks why, I will just reply "Why are you wearing pants?" (Another man wearing a kilt would never ask.)
Chris.

I have made that same reply, although I said trousers, and all I got was a blank stare

As you are in the US, perhaps they did not know what trousers were!

It's not really justifying, its more like beating a dead horse over a long debated discussion...

Oh the guy was American (Boston-Irish and a former colleague) and he knew what I meant. We did become good friends after that, but to use a local colloquialism here in Massachusetts we did bust each others b***s quite a bit.

I never need to find a reason to wear the kilt. I just wear it because it is normal for me to wear it.

I usually tell the person that it is because the the day of the week ends in "day" and follow it up with a smile. That usually breaks the ice and allows them to engage in a normal conversation.

I usually reply "Because they will arrest me if I take it off!"
