| | | Why jones?
Can anyone tell me why waiting for a kilt to arrive is called jonesing? Is there some deep arcane etymology known only to kilted initiates?
Also, is the addiction curable? I'm waiting on my first 9 yarder, and I'm already working out what kilts #2 and #3 might be...

The Urban Dictionary is your friend: Jonesing Quote:
1. jonesing
to have a strong need, desire, or craving for something.
see also: jones
2. jonesing
craving; wanting
3. jonesing
the act of needing something badly. Usually related to chemical dependency. | I don't know about you, but when it comes to kilts, I can relate.
Best regards,
Jake

Last week I bought my mother-in-law a new Whirlpool state of the art washer and dryer, the new kind that have the impeller instead of an agitator and she was beside herself waiting for the delivery. I teased her a lot about 'jonesing' and she just stared at me with that 'doe in the headlights' look...I wonder if I should explain 'jonesing' to her or keep it a secret?

Chances are you will get the same look trying to explain it to her.

I've heard the term outside XMarks once, in a Spider Robinson book, and it was in relation to the aforementioned chemical dependency.

Thanks all for the pointers - I'd not seen the word being used anywhere outside XMarks, and assumed that, like 'Tank' it was internal slang or jargon.
I notice that no-one has yet commented on my second question - Is it curable?
