A windproof kilt?

So, I'm saving up for my next kilt, and there is a very specific hole in my wardrobe that needs to be plugged. All my kilts are just too light to stay down on a windy day. Even my alphakilt has blown up in the back a few times.

I need something heavy enough to stay down on the windiest of days (we get a lot of them around here) but at the same time, it can't be too warm. Heat is a very big problem for me.

And if that trade off wasn't bad enough, I also need to keep the price down. As much as I want a UK workman, I just can't afford to drop $250 on a kilt right now.

So, I'm thinking about getting something from alt.kilt, as Regina will work with any material and her prices are more than competitive. But before I talk to her, I thought I'd see if anyone could help me out, as I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. What's a good material that's heavy, but not warm?

Having said that there will be days that its too warm for, perhaps you can find one on ebay, I know Arlen as well as others have had success this way.

What Glen said - Unless you do the Marylin Monroe thing and stand over a wind vent, you'll never have problems with a heavyweight tank! I have walked the outer deck on a cruise ship at sea when it was REALLY blowing, and never had a problem!

That is a problem because weight translates to warm. Also the budget constraints don't help. Short of attaching table cloth weights to your hem, when you can afford it, Freedom Kilts can make you a kilt in winter weight cotton. It is very heavy but doesn't have the same feel as wool. I find mine to be warm in winter but not overly warm in summer.

I recall a previous post on this topic where someone had purchased some small high strength magnets and snapped them together near the selvage on the inside of a couple of the pleats. Would at least be worth a try as you should be able to get a pack for $5 or less.

Add my vote to the traditional 16 oz. wool camp.

I have a four yard box pleat in regimental (18 oz.) MoD Leslie tartan that is almost as windproof as my eight yard Tewksbury.

The biggest problem with wool is the price. I know a lot of people think it is THE material for kilts, but for the amount of money I'd have to spend, personally, I'd prefer to get something from Utilikilts or Freedom Kilts.

I believe I've heard people say that canvas isn't so warm, so I was considering that as an option. Forgot to mention that earlier.

If I can't find a material to completely solve the problem, the other possibility is to look at the construction. A significant hem for example, might make it more bottom heavy and therefore resistant to lifting, right? The magnet idea is interesting (though I can just see that causing other kinds of trouble) and I've heard mixed reviews of UK's modesty snaps, but the basic idea of having an attachment to keep the kilt from flying open seems fairly sound.
