    Exclamation Wolf whistled

Today while walking to a hardware store in a workmans UK, some person of uncouthe reputation whistled at me not once but three times and increasingly louder in volume. I did not give this person the satisfaction of me turning around to confront them but over my shoulder I did inform them of what I thought of their upbringing. The funny thing is not an hour befor a guy said to me " Now there's a man that can wear a kilt"

So what's my point? I learned to wolf whistle from a cartoon and even in my youth did it a few times. I have since learned that is considered offensive to women. I find it indeed to be offensive as well when it is directed at me. The whistling seemed to me to be an attack on my masculinity by an illbred ,uncultured slob. Then again I could just have a thin skin as I have been having a bad couple of days.

One thing for sure I have and will not be whistling at any one

Was the person whistling at you male or female?

I think if it was me and a female was whistling I'd take it as a compliment. Now if it was a male whistling at me and he was just doing it to be annoying...

Why is is OK for a woman to whistle at a man, but it's the mark of an ill-cultured lout for a man to whistle at a woman?

Not being argumentative here, just curious what your thinking is.

I, myself would never whistle at a woman, ever.

Rude maybe, but still amusing. Most of the whistles I've gotten were plainly light-hearted.

It's ill-cultured for the women too, but I'll take the compliment anyway.

I think it's considered worse for a man to do it because historically a man has been considered to be an aggressor in such a situation, and therefore "threatening" to the woman, while, conversely, the woman is not considered to be a threat in the opposite situation.

Got wolf whistled at by a woman a few months ago when kilted, but didn't acknowledge or turn or comment...

I only get whistled at by friends...male and female, and I know they're joshing me...

I have whistled at girls in the past, but only when they were pals that I was probably trying to provoke into a foodfight or something like that...

Usually among friends yeah, to show appreciation? Why not say you look great Not done? Neither is wearing a kilt every day in the USA.

As I said earlier Whistling like that is the sign of an ill mannered buffoon.

I tried a wolf whistle once, many years ago. I can't whistle worth a darn. It came out sounding like a wheeze. The woman probably thought I had tuberculosis.

I have been whistled at though both by women as a compliment, and by guys as a put down -- or maybe I turned them on too -- I'll never know.

Comes with the territory, I suppose.
