women wearing Utilikilts

Perhaps I am the only one who feels this way, but I have an issue with women wearing Utilikilts. I mean....haven't women already stolen enough of men's fashions? Can't we have at least ONE article of clothing to call our very own?

I think that all it will take is a few women walking the streets in Utilikilts for most men to NEVER want to wear a Utilikilt in public.

Am I totally out of line with my thoughts on this? How does everyone else feel?

Well, you are not totally out of line in your thinking but it's a battle that cannot be won. Women have always taken mens clothing, feminized it and worn it .... because men like it.

The difference here is that we kiltmen, depending our region, are already having to deal with the 'men should wear pants' mentality and it doesn't help our case for women to be wearing our kilts. The way we define the very word 'kilt' prohibits it from being a womans garment ... trouble is the word 'pants' once enjoyed the same gender specific definition and we all know how that wound up.

I actually wrote SportKilt a letter when they started selling 'womens kilts' ... I pointed out that by doing so they were working against our efforts to establish kilts as a mans garment ... of course, their womens kilts are selling like crazy. In the end I even bought 3 of them for Peggy so we could match.

I'm either a bad kiltman or a realist ... maybe both. I just can't stand that women are already moving towards making our kilts their kilts but I can't wait for Peggy and I to go out dancing in our matching kilts either. Frankly, we can't stop this phenomenon but we can reduce its impact by increasing the number of men who ...

I agree as well, if they like them let them wear them. I certainly enjoy looking at them

I don't like people telling me I can't wear a kilt, so how can I tell a woman they can't wear a kilt. Fair is fair,

Well I don't really like the idea of women copying men's fashions but I have to admit women wearing kilts and hose can look quite sexy.

But the kilt, as men wear it, is traditionally a men's garment, not ladies wear. I would like to see it stay that way...
there are plenty of othe variations a woman can wear, and still look quite striking in. The one exception I see to this, is a woman piper... I have seen a number of pipe bands with ladies in the ranks, as they can pipe just as well (and some probably better) than their male counterparts. In this instance, it is for the sake of uniformity I think... and perhaps a little tradition, as I don't recall any historically noted lady pipers. That of course can always change, as which pipers from current times will be spoken fondly of in 20 years as influecing someone else who's become proficient at playing?

Ok, I trailed off on a tangent a bit.
But I was a bit offended when I went to the last ren-fair to see some teenage girl, running around in a kilt and sporran. That bothered me a bit, as it almost seems like stepping on your heritage, or your traditions.
Am I the only one who feels that way?

Hooray for publicity, but the publicity should show the kilt as male attire, not unisex.

If a woman is wearing a USA Kilt, Freedom Kilt, Union Kilt, Neo Kilt, Sport Kilt, or an R Kilt, are you just as upset.

Or is it just the Utilikilt?

The reason I ask is because you singled out Utilikilt, without mentioning any of the other, countless kiltmakers in the world.

I have to admit that I am with possingk on this one. How can we bristle up about freedom of choice, whilst denying that freedom from others? I don't see that we can.

I have to agree. A kilt is a man's garment. If a woman wants to wear one, then she can always wear the pleated skirt or the hostess skirt....

EeeGads Pb!....that's a pretty suicidal statement! Sort of like "suicide by cop" only suicide by having Utilikilted ladies attack you....

There are far too many of them! And most of them look dang fine in their UK's.

My red headed Utilikilted lady is one of them....I won't tell her you posted this...
