Wool clothing?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some good clothing, shirts and such, to wear with the kilt, or not.

What I'm looking for is wool shirts and t-shirt type stuff, under-wear (liner socks, light t-shirts)

I switched to wearing wool socks almost exclusivly, and I can't believe how good my feet have been feeling! Even with the modern materials and such, wool always seems to be amongst the best for clothing (Look at the kilt!). I switched to Smartwool socks and my feet love it. But, they are a bit more expensive.

I'm trying to replace my upper body clothing, hats and other headwear, with wool. I'm living in Phoenix, and I don't have to explain that it gets HOT. So, thinner, lighter weight wool would be a better choice. I'm not so much going for warmth, but for comfort.

May time people associate wool=warmth, while that is true with heavyweight wool clothing, wool is amazing in it's ability to regulate the body as well.

So, like I said, I'm looking for some good, reasonably priced wool clothing goods.

Ideas?

The Sportsman's Guide has new and used military wool shirts, sweaters, and socks. I've been wearing a Swiss wool military sweater as a long sleeve shirt the last couple of days.

Wool will always be more expensive, but Smartwool, Ibex, and Icebreaker all have extensive lines of merino clothing. I wear a Smartwool baselayer shirt all the time, both hiking and off-trail.

I use smartwool socks and am spoilt with them. Wow I didn't know one could actually get wool t shirts. What about hemp, thunderbolt? I have a shirt from RKilts and just love it. The only problem is finding hemp clothing.

I'm with Andrew. You can't beat a lightweight wool t-shirt as a base layer in almost any situation. Icebreaker, Ibex, Smartwool are the premier lines, and Filson is making base layers now, although I fondled soem yesterday and they seemed kinda rough.

I've ordered froma couple of companies in New Zealand--even with shipping to the US it came out OK. I recently bought some base layers from Campmor made by Terramar for a reasonable price. Just look for merino content for the softest fit.

Hemp t-shirts are easy to find via the internet--they are durable as all get out and soften with age. But they don't have all the special characterisics of wool--like the resilience that lets it hold its shape despite wear and moisture. Grant--let me know if you need sources. Since growing hemp and producing fabric from it is still illegal in the US, it is actually much easier to find hemp clothing in Canada.

Best wool for me is Pendleton shirts, or www.filson.com, or L.L.Bean stuff.

You know you need that wool down in Phoenix for INDOORS to cope with the refrigeration.

I really haven"t heard much about it. Other than the usual "hemp" stuff.

The smartwool stuff is fantastic, except, it's expensive. I have a hard time swallowing a $60 price tag for a t-shirt...
