Just be sure you have a sporran and wear tall socks while you're still in your "break-in" period. Eventually you won't care what folks think, but initially you'll feel better by removing any doubt as to your wardrobe.

Matt, Tartan Hiker is right. Consider the sporran and tall socks as "training attire" for now. They do help give you a bit more confidence that even the dumbest of dumb (maybe) can see you're not wearing "a dress." Last weekend in Dallas, where I'd gone for a wedding, the old friend, with whom I was staying was a little uncertain about my kilted ways, but when I put on the sporran, he felt a lot more relaxed about my wearing a kilt out in public!

The most important thing, however, is how you feel about it. As a writer once said, "a true Scot will feel more comfortable in a kilt than in a pair of trousers." We'll I won't go that far, but I know, for me, the "comfort" and self-confidence I feel in a kilt far outweighs any worry I have about what somebody may be thinking. We know we're men and we're wearing a truly masculine garment. Hold you head up, walk proudly and that will be a powerful message to virtually anyone with whom you come in contact.

I had a very elderly lady with a thick Russian accent come up to me and tell me she thought I looked dashing and handsome in my "skirt." She was obviously having a hard time remembering the English word for a kilt and she was incredibly old so I simply thanked her very graciously for her compliment. It was obvious from the smile and her demeanor that she was definitely giving me a compliment so I was more than happy to accept it.

Best way I've taken care of the "he's wearing a skirt" comment is to let the commenter's own friends handle the problem.

Last fall I was at the gun range with a friend, breaking in our newly aquired firearms. We were leaving, and three individuals from what I can only guess would be extremely rural parts of oklahoma were sitting on the tailgate of their truck, cleaning their rifles. One of them looked up as I was walking past to leave. My friend was about 5 paces behind me, and told me that he heard this little verbal exchange.

guy1 "He's wearing a F***** skirt!"
guy 2 " No, you F***** dumba**, it's a kilt. Are you some kind of F***** moron?"

I laughed my butt off when he told me about this as we got in my truck to leave. Always better to let a commenter's friends ridicule them. Makes life a whole lot more interesting. Especially when most of the riducule comes in the form of expeltives.

I guess that I just find myself thinking in a frame of mind like that uncanny characterization of Sean Connery that Darrell Hammond did on the Jeopardy satires on Saturday Night Live...my son and I will start imitating Hammond's imitation of Connery and start trading jibes - much to my wife's dismay. The "pants suit" line almost has to be delivered in that particular voice...

..."Hey, where's your pants?"

"Oh, I must have left them at your MOTHER'S house last night, ya beef-witted apple-john!"

Hey, you guys try wearing a kilt in Miami, FL. Talking about being stared at like a freaking bug from out of space. No comments at all, just amazing stares. (for those who dont know, Miami's population is like 90% hispanic, then black, and very little Anglo folk).

Google them...I found a website today with them linked as Real Media files...they could just sell a DVD of the Jeopardy ones and I'd jump at it...

...and I absolutely HATE Will Farrell but the only two things that he's done that I'll sit through are the Jeopardy Parodies and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back....and they wanted Tommy Lee Jones for the part in that...go figger.
