I like to use Scotweb tartan desginer. It lest you make as many tartans as you want, them delete them at your will. I use it almost daily.
I agree with your disapointments in the Army...

yeah, sporran looks better in second photo. Seems when I'm wearing my kilt the sporran top is usually about where the button on jeans would be. I guess, as Nile said, about 3 or four fingers...

Looks good.
Is your sporran just a bit high?
Its hard to find the right length, too high looks goofy, too low and it rubs the wrong things raw.
