The hip buckle (the second one on the fringe edge) is purely decorative and doesn't serve any function (except on a Highland dancer's kilt, where it helps control the fringe edge of the apron when...

So what did you mean by the difference between the two tartans?? Which two tartans?

Hi all,
The Eclipse tartan and the Lunar tartan are entirely different tartans.
The Lunar tartan was designed in the 1970s in honor of the Apollo moon landings, with the red stripe for the...

In my view, Velcro is not stuff that is friendly to wool kilting fabric. Testing its effect by dabbing it against a scrap of tartan won't tell you what those teeny hooks will do to the kilt when...

I think you should be OK with hair canvas - it's still flexible (unlike a stiff belt), and it shouldn't dig into your back. Let me know how it goes!

Last summer, Rocky Roeger at USA Kilts asked if he could interview me for a video on their website. My husband and I went down and had a wonderful day there. I thought there might be some folks on...

Properly installed canvas isn't actually stiff, like a belt would be, and it does a pretty good job of distributing stress between the bottom of the pleats to the waist, so I'm thinking it might be...

Will do - I'm totally swamped at work for the next couple weeks, but, if you're rolling ahead, let's talk after that!

Hi Pesmonde,
The uploads are really fuzzy and a stretch to read, but I will try to have a look at what you've written plus your tables and give you some feedback over the weekend.

Yep - I agree. 2" is too much. I typically put only a 1" rise on a little kid's kilt. Their belts are narrower as well, so it's fine.

If you intend to pleat to the stripe or sett (as opposed to cheating the pleats or just pleating higgledy piggledy), you'll only be able to get one pleat per sett if you pleat to the stripe, and...

Hi Arnot,
A kilt for a tyke that size stitches up really fast, because it has an itty bitty little fell. But honestly, when I've made them, I've made them the same way as for an adult. Just make...

Hello all,
I'm so sorry for not responding to the posts by 12stones and ktk1961 - Steve and I have gone around a couple times about the fact that I couldn't login, but all seems to be set now....

Go you! You might find the following post that I did a few years ago helpful! http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f304/pleating-challenge-5-getting-precise-pleating-stripe-78527/

When you are pleating to the stripe, you don't have to pleat to one of the pivots. The red block looks wide enough to me that you could pleat to the red block that lies to one side of the double blue...

So, here are the issues with your pinned pleating (pic below):

The tartan has two pivots, one with a wide tan...

I just took a quick look at this - will write more later, but I have to get an assignment written for my students.
On a glance, this looks totally reasonable to me. Pleat size is going to be on...

Something does sound odd. But, how big are you around at the hips, and what is the size of the sett in the piece of Wildcat that you have? And you have 7 yards of tartan, correct?

I'm sure the hadn't been invented yet.....:D

We definitely had them when I was a kid! We even had the chaise longue type (which we, of course, called a chase lounge....). They were actually pretty comfortable in comparison to hard plastic...
