That does seem odd, but perhaps you're in an area with bands that do supply instruments? Like imrichmond, around here most bands standardize the chanter and require pipers to provide the drones.

I don't think that's the 48th; as Glen points out, the caption says it's the Q.O.R. Also, the 48th wasn't formed until 1891, 23 years after this picture.

I'm not particularly. I know very little about the Canadian armed forces, and even less about their Highland regiments. (As a piper I know a bit about their pipe bands.)
I was intrigued by the...

That's the 48th Highlanders of Canada, parading in Newark, NJ, in 1917.

For no apparent reason, the picture is in the "1900-1913"...

Godspeed and a safe journey, Turpin.

Wikipedia is citing the Online Etymological Dictionary - but I found it in the OED. There's not a better tool for English word origins. As far as the theological scholars' attention to detail, we're...

"James" is English variation of Iacomus, which is a Late Latin dialect variant of Iacobus, probably created first by nasalizing the "o" and getting "Iacombus", and then gradual dropping of the b in...

Kitchen pipes are small bagpipes, generally using a practice chanter instead of a pipe chanter. They are intended as a practice instrument rather than a performance instrument. The drones generally...

Waiting ... I need a new sporran! My current black daywear that I use for competition has suffered numerous failures of its tassels and stitching, and is, in fact, largely held together with chanter...

My son. (I added the original because - despite the film last year - so many Americans are unfamiliar with Tintin.

And it gets paintbrushes REALLY clean.
I've tried Scoresby's, and it should be fine for mixing, especially for non-aficionados.
And you can always clean brushes with it.

McPherson is a nice games, although I do wish it was a little later after Tulsa. The Iron Thistle Festival/games in Yukon in April is also close - if they'd add piping comps I'd make it a priority to...

Looks really good. I don't even mind flat caps, although I think a solid tweed cap would look better with that outfit than motley. My opinion, take it for what it's worth.

The appearance is the only thing that you can see to be different in pictures. Having played both Pakistani-made and Dunbar pipes, I will tell you that there is a huge difference in the way they...

Any idea where Daniel was born? (Even just the state is helpful)

It is interesting. I think the picture of the tester "testing" the pipes tells you everything you need to know about the quality.

Not just kilt drawers - woolen TARTAN kilt drawers.
Woolen.
Tartan.
Kilt drawers.
I have two questions:
1) Where can I buy some?

The OED defines doublet as a "close-fitting body-garment, with or without sleeves, worn by men from the 14th to the 18th centuries", and give citations referring to it up to 1835. It seems to have...

Per this page, it's prior to 1982, when the phrase "Distilled Spirits" on the tax label was replaced by simply "Spirits". (They stopped using the tax stamps on the bottles entirely in 1985.)That page...

It looks fine, although I agree with Panache that the diced hose tops look too formal. I'd replace them with some of What Price Glory's khaki/dark green hose tops, which would (I think) look more...

I just got back from New Orleans, where I visited the National WWII museum (formerly the D-Day museum). Very interesting and moving. Here are a couple of relevant pictures:...

Try Denise Robinson: http://piperlady.vpweb.com/default.html. I would also go to the Highland Games in May and ask the pipers there about their teachers.

I would agree that quality matters - and also that price doesn't necessarily equal quality. The reason quality matters is that you'll never stop using your PC. When you've gotten on the pipes, you'll...
