It does! I played in a medieval ensemble for a while this year and we had both pipes and hurdy gudry, and they were super cool together.

I have a USA Kilts semi-trad and briefly had one of those saffron wool kilts from Stillwater. There's no comparison, and IMO the Stillwater is overpriced. The fabric was fine, not great, just fine....

Nylon ripstop would make an absolutely awful kilt. I think one utility kilt maker claimed to use it, but they also didn't understand anything about their materials. Nylon/cotton ripstop, OTOH, is...

Hawk and I were behind the kilt night that ran for a bit at Horse Brass over in PDX. I never had the time to get out and really promote it, so after a year or so it died off. The location was okay,...

I feel your pain. I work in a dog shelter rather than a hospital, but I suspect our nasty laundry is pretty similar.

Me, I'd think pretty hard about red laces in those boots. It can send a very specific message, even though they're brogues and not docs. Having known people who take that message seriously regardless...

If it were me, I'd probably do something along the lines of outdoorsy dressed up - a nice button down and pants in the style of any of the brands you'd find in a place like REI. Definitley no tee,...

The Unipiper is rad. I put together a sneaky surprise vow renewal for my wife on our anniversary two years ago and hired him to play. He's very Portland, in the best possible way.

IMO one of the best things about faire are the performances. We had a small one for a few years here that wasn't spectacular in most respects, but the music was fabulous. Big events get rad acts like...

I've used Scotweb in the past with no complaints. It's not hard to find poly/rayon in tartan or tartan-ish patterns in fabric stores but it's not the same thing at all.

The cheap utility kilts are all more or less the same and come from more or less the same place. If you're concerned that a UT Kilt will be junk, a kilt from Damn Near Kilt 'Em won't be any...

Not going to happen unless you get super lucky with something used. If you're skinny and like box pleats I have a black Stumptown Kilt that I want to get rid of.
Honestly though, the Pakistani...

What is not inconclusive, however, is my intense dislike of wearing shoes. :)

If I could go barefoot everywhere I'd be the happiest person on earth. Since I can't, Vibrams are a pretty decent second choice.
-
Agreed. There are days where I just can't deal with heavy, hot boots and thick socks when I've already got 6 yards of fabric hanging on my hips making me warmer than I'd like. It's either barefoot,...

If it was a festival vendor then the kilts are likely the same Pakistani imports that everyone sells. I did a quickie Google search and didn't turn up anything with embroidery like you saw, but you...

I don't see an American president being inaugurated in a kilt ever. Kilt up for the wedding of a family member or close friend where it's going to be pretty standard attire for male guests? Sure,...
-
That kilt is just plain awful looking, so I'm assuming it's Pakistani. It's really puffy looking at the waistband, like the wool Stillwater I used to have, which didn't have the guts of the pleats...

Wow. That's really awful. Did you get a look at the back at all? I was reading somewhere, maybe on the Utilikilts Facebook, that the back of the new kilts had an apron of some sort on the inside.
-
Good question, since I'd think that a lightweight short skirt wouldn't be that much different than shorts as far as comfort in the heat is concerned. I will say that in 90+ degree weather it's pretty...

Agreed. As with many other things in life, just because you can doesn't always mean you should. The two examples are fine I guess, not my cup of joe but whatever. Outlander is, I assume, still super...

Is it? I had no idea, though I guess that's not surprising since I was never much of a tie guy until the last few years. I tied a windsor exactly once but thought it looked really strange on me. For...

This is what I like about it the most. I didn't at first, but then something clicked in my brain and now I love it. Totally dead sexy looking.

The sewing nerd in me would really like to see one of these in person. I'm curious about the rear box pleat, and the rear apron that I've seen Utilikilts mention. I've tried to find a compelling...

It's a kilt so there is no pattern, just lots of experience and a healthy dose of being awesome. I'd suggest the x-kilt manual as a starting point if you want to make one yourself.
