    ( Ogle ) Border Reiver ?

I was wondering after reading a Post about Border Reivers , I seen the name
Ogle pop up , So I was interested in finding out if ( Ogle ) was Scottish ?

I looked up the name and It appears to be (English )
But , does any Clan carry ( Ogle ) as a Sept ?

My Grand Father was Ogle on my Mom side .

Just wanted to know if any one could help with info .

** I did a search on here and it does not appear to show up that this question has been ask before **

    Thank you

As with most names, there is no one answer. As with most clans, there is no set list of names with all bearers of that
name being automatically in the clan. Although per the Lyon Court ruling, all Morrisons, if Scottish, are one clan though there areat least three branches from different parts of Scotland with no hard proof of direct relationship, many non clan names associated with particular clans may have connection to more than one clan due to where a particular ancestor lived or had allegiance for whatever reason. Only by following your own line back can you come to any certainty about where in Scotland or what clan or , indeed, if Scotland at all. Ogle may be its own name from anywhere. In Scotland, it may also be a convenient shortening of Ogilvy, a territorial reference name in Angus, held by the Lords Ogilvy of Airlie; or it may have connection to the village of Ochiltree east of Ayr, or to Loch Ochiltree between Newton Stewart and Girvan.

As you are in Georgia, it may be relevant to mention the Ogletree and Oglesby surnames that can be found on tax and
militia rolls in early Wilkes, Hancock, Emanuel, and probably other counties from about the time of the revolution onward.
Early settlers or county clerks may have found it more convenient to write a shorter version, and done so. My family has a document from Wilkes County about 1775 with 3 different spellings of our surname in the same document.

In any case, you may have many enjoyable (and occasionally frustrating)ahead as you sort through the available records
from what you now know. Genealogy can be as addictive as kilts, but your handiwork seen here on the forum leads
me to believe you have will and skill enough to sort this out.

    Have fun.

As an added note, clan Ogilvy does not appear to be very active in the ways some others are. If Dumfries and Galloway, could be
reiver connected. Also relevant that English Ogles were early on in Northumberland, and the reiver culture straddled an oft-changing
border, so might not make too much difference which side of the border, as the border changed, not them.
