As a fellow self-taught amateur, I have a couple comments. First, it's great that you're picking up the art. Be careful though, because it's highly addictive. I'm teaching my girlfriend to knit right now. Second, be patient, and don't be too surprised (or upset) if you end up knitting three or four hose toppers before you have one you actually like. And third, I personally find knitting in the round much easier. I have a problem sewing the seams together, so as long as I use a stitch marker at the beginning of the round, using double-pointed needles (or a circular needle for larger projects) just makes more sense. I'm looking forward to seeing your work. Feel free to post pics as you go.

So yeah got a little motivated at work today(I work evening security at a very slow hospital) I managed to complete both toppers. I seamed them together once I got home.
