Just goes to show how dirty some people’s minds can be.
Almost all these names have a perfectly reasonable explanation, and in one case – Brokenwind/Broken Wynd – there is a good case to be made for going back to an earlier form.
It calls to mind the trouble Austrian villagers have had with English-speaking visitors who have a morbid fascination with the name Fucking (I refuse to bowdlerise this with asterisks because it is a genuine name), in Oberösterreich.
Not a week goes by but some American, Australian or Briton runs off with one of the name signs because they think it so hideously disgusting.
But the only thing that is disgusting is the behaviour of these vandals, misnamed tourists.

No kidding. Not only the tourists, but the internet has polluted that town as well! I just Googled to see if I could find out more information about Fucking, and you wouldn't believe the foulness that appeared on my screen. F****** disgusting!
