I just re-visited this thread after several months only to be even more impressed the second time around.

As to hobnails, the British Army, especially the Guards, still use them on their boots for ceremonial/parade dress.

Just stumbled on it myself as well. Your work is inspiring. (and makes my job seem so dull...)

    DFWII,

I am in awe. Started casually reading through the posts and an hour later I've been through your essay twice. Simply amazing, so well explained and illustrated that now I know why my shoes in London as a youngster took a week or more to fit and be finished. My compliments and admiration of your craftsmanship and artistry.
    Respectfully,

    Bruce

    Thank you.

Doing an essay like that is a little like having children...you never know how they are gonna turn out until they go away from home for a while and then come back. Re-reading it, myownself, I am pretty satisfied with it. Considering how much was left out, by necessity, it offers a pretty good overview.

    And it reads OK too.

The spirit of the Declaration of Arbroath (6 April 1320) abides today, defiantly resisting any tyranny that would disarm, disperse and despoil proud people of just morals, determined to keep the means of protecting their families and way of life close at hand.

DWFII, wonderful explaination. I have been through the Vass book a few times and your descriptions finally made it "click" for me as far as the welt goes.

    11hr,

That's a great book, isn't it? Not suitable as a tutorial but for folks that are not satisfied with the penny-plus paper and plastic concoctions that masquerade as shoes in departments stores, it, at least, affords some insight into what goes into a shoe and what makes a shoe something extraordinary.

It's kind of like finally finding out what goes into that white liquid from grocery stores we all guzzle with cookies. Where does it come from??!!
