    Penicuik sketches pt1

Okay Jay, I'm going to post what I have in a series of 3 messages here. I maybe missing a few as Stuart Reid lists that there are sketches of 40 clansmen (is that 40 sketches or 40 individuals in a few sketches? ). I do know that in one of his books he mentions a sketch of Gordon of Glenbucket and I do not have that one

At any rate here is what I have (some I've included Reid's comments).
    Enjoy!

Jacobite Hussars raised by John Murray of Broughton

Highland Clansman identified by the Penicuik artist as Duncan MacGregor of Dalnasplutrach

    Penicuik sketches pt2

identified as 'Glengarry' - presumably Colonel Angus McDonnell, Glengarry's second son who was accidentally shot & killed on 22 January 1746

portly Highland officer (right) is not identified, however he fits contemporary descriptions of Charles Stewart of Ardesheal, commander of the Appin Regiment

Clansman identified as "Shiterluck Younger" - presumably the McGhie of Shirloch mortally wounded & captured at Culloden while serving with the Atholl Brigade

    Penicuik sketches pt3

Clansman with a Turceach - or Turkish-style, bladed broadsword

Highlanders arresting a woman in an Edinburgh street

Highland swordsman with a Turceach blade

Highland soldier with Lochaber axe. Interestingly, only two out of nearly 40 Clansmen sketched by the Penicuik artist are armed with this weapon. Note that he also appears to be wearing breeches

    More Penicuik sketches:

    Hello all,
I just happened to be flipping thru another book by Stuart Reid & ran across some more Penicuik sketches, including the one of Gordon of Glenbucket. I'll post them (w/Reid's comments) below.
    Enjoy!
    =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=

Left-handed Highlander. Like most gentleman, as distinct from ordinary clansmen depicted by the artist, he wears trews rather than a plaid.

An elegant but unnamed Highland gentleman in trews.

    a Highland sentry.

John Gordon of Glenbucket. The sketch corresponds w/ other eyewitness accounts describing him as bent over with rheumatism and riding a grey Highland pony. (note: unfortunately if I attempt to enlarge this sketch it looses all detail...sorry.)

Alexander MacDonald of Keppoch, killed at Culloden.

Some very scruffy looking British regulars...such illustrations of soldiers' actual appearance on campaign are very rare indeed.

    "Rebell Gratitude"

The following is a contemporary engraving entitled "Rebell Gratitude". It depicts the shooting of Captain Crosett, Engineer and ADC to Cumberland, by a Highland officer whose life had been spared.

I know its not a Penicuik sketch but since it is listed as a contemporary sketch from the era, I thought I'd post it for you. If I run into any other contemporary or eyewitness pieces I'll post them as well

    Paul Sandby (1725-1809)

Paul Sandby , 1725-1809, English watercolorist and draftsman. Accompanying Cumberland's army, he was employed to survey the Highlands of Scotland after the 1745 rebellion. During his years in Scotland (1746-51) he learned to interpret landscape with delicacy and precision of detail. Most of his paintings of landscapes are done in watercolor or gouache; many of his most important drawings he reproduced in aquatint, a process that he introduced in England. Windsor Castle is the subject of a number of his drawings, which have sometimes been confused with those of his brother, Thomas (1721-99), also a fine draftsman. Much of Paul's work is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

    Sketch by Paul Sandby:

Two Jacobite prisoners being escorted by four infantrymen.
