Well hello there, Labtech8 and welcome to X Marks. Your arrows have certainly found the the target with the kilted rabble here at X Marks. I started out with utility kilts myself before working may way into wearing more traditional kilts but, I still enjoy wearing utility style kilts occasionally.
I've spent a little time in western Ohio my self, especially in a little town called Put-In-Bay (as well as, Sandusky and Port Clinton).
Cheers,
Nile
Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. I'm in a similar situation. I've worn tartan kilts my entire life, but only once or twice a year on special occaisions. It wasn't until about 2 years ago, when I got a modern utility kilt in solid black, that I started seeing the kilt as clothing and not a costume, so to speak. I also got a solid grey one last year, and I've been wearing them on a regular basis. They just fit my sense of color and style fairly well.
More recently I felt the urge to expand a little, into visually-conservative tartan (like mostly black). I just this week got a Stillwater Kilts Nightstalker. See my thread at:

Perhaps that discussion may overlap with your interests.
So welcome and happy kilting!

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
