While there are some fashion faux pas, my greatest focus is on the kilt itself.
Here's what I see:
- His over shirt is not tucked in
- His socks aren't long enough
- The pleats are in the front
- It looks like there could be an elastic band at the bottom of the pleats (look at his right leg) and/or they are sewn down so that they don't flatten
- It is too long
- Not sure, but it looks like there is a loose piece of cloth just kinda hanging there next to his left leg

Is this a type of kilt that I have not seen before? Please help.
The Ford is still on the road?

Fellow Ladies and Gentlemen of Xmarks....
While Jock Scott may have been born wearing a kilt, or wore it shortly there after, most of us have had to learn from someone else or from others of a forum such as this how to properly wear it. Therefore be gentle, and suggest that they have a look at kilt sites such as this.
I encountered a young man at the Calgary Highland Games a couple of years ago who was wearing his kilt "in reverse" and casually suggested that most wear the pleats in the back. Unfortunately I saw him later that day with it still the wrong way about. I concluded that it may have been intentional.

Agreed, I have learned much and more here, but still do not know enough yet to really talk to him about it, which is why I was asking for guidance. Either way, I plan to be nice and respectful, I just wanted to make sure that I had the discrepancies correct so I do not make a fool of myself. Thank you for the recommendation to suggest he check out sites such as this, I didn't think of that. I will extend the invite, although I do not think that he will accept, he seems to only wear it once or twice a year.

I hope he wasn't going to a formal event under the impression that he was suitably attired.

As this is the question of the thread, I've a thought. When your kilt(s) arrive, get kitted out, & let him see you. It's that old line, "Actions can (sometimes, maybe, not always, you hope?) speak louder than words.

If you know this person and wish to help perhaps you could direct him to this site or perhaps direct him to some photos of guys wearing kilts.
And then let him discover how to wear his kilt for himself.

That would be a positive way to help the individual & spare any ill feelings.

Aside from him and the kilt facing opposite directions, I think he's fine. I'm a fan of more traditional kilt-wear. I much prefer a tucked-in, button-up shirt, or a decent jumper, but there's nothing wrong with casual either. You'll catch me (at times) this summer in a stumptown kilt, t-shirt (most likely tucked in, but not always) boots and low socks. And as it nears fall, it I catch a chill, I'll quite probably throw a light flannel over the t-shirt, to similar effect. Once he and his kilt get on the same bearing he'll be doing just fine.
