Out of curiosity, does anyone know why some images hosted on photobucket still appear to be working while others do not?

It could depend on which of the various Photobucket links were used to post the photos in the first place. I could never remeber which one to use so often wound up using a link, then deleting surplus information.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

I'm with you, Brother!
I didn't know what all the hubbub was about, because my Photobucket images still show up.
Then I discovered that, like you, I'm paying for the ad-free service, which won't sever links until December 2018. (Or so they say.)
Why throw good money after bad?
So yesterday I started an Imgur account, and I'm migrating my zillion photos onto that.
Luckily the vast majority are on my laptop, and I've backed up all those on a memory stick.
BTW though I'm paying for ad-free Photobucket, when I log on to my Photobucket page it's covered with popup ads! Time to get out.
Yes it's a bummer with the old threads, but hey, since they get locked anyway they're dead threads. The thing of locking threads has always, to me, given this site a feel sort of halfway between a normal chat site and FaceBook. On the former threads are active forever and get revived from time to time as new contributions crop up; on the latter things get lost in the constant flow of stuff within hours or days.

I'm trying the direct thing now...
I didn't see any earlier version to double-click on to expand, so all I get is the teeny tiny version.
Here's the same photo as hosted on Imgur. (Can you spot Yours Truly?)
BTW the tartan is British Columbia.

Yeah, a rock-hounding site I've been a member of just got shellacked with the change in policy at PhotoBucket. They're certainly not making any friends. I wonder how long it will take of a mass customer migration to revise their policies, or announce they're closing down altogether?

I've uploaded three albums to Imgur in the last two days. It's a process that will take a while; I have 20 or 30 albums.
Once I have everything I need off my PhotoBucket page I'll cancel it, and hope I don't still get billed.
