Hello from France
Hello everyone,
I found the site while discovering the personal creation of a kilt thanks to the book The art of Kiltmaking. I am still a long way from starting because I have never done more than sew a button, but I keep the idea in mind to make one myself.

I do quite a bit of sewing and other creative stuff with yarn, and find that kilts are amongst the most satisfying of garments to construct, only surpassed by smocks, and that's just the embroidery.
If you decide to go ahead with making a kilt, the fabric is quite important - it should not be too rigid, as firstly it will not swing well, but also it is far easier to get a malleable fabric to take the subtle shaping which a well fitting kilt requires. A cloth intended for making kilts is of course ideal - but there are other options if you want to practice a bit before going for what could be an expensive purchase to make an important garment.
