    Irish tartans...

Rocky's County Mayo Tartan traditional kilt reminded me of a list of Irish family and county tartans that I saw recently:

    http://www.doyle.com.au/tartan_irish.htm

Very nice web site in general to peruse; a lot of good Irish historical tidbits, etc.

I prefer the Tara, Clare, Cork and Ulster Red myself.

    Cheers,

    T.

I too like the Ulster Red. Family connections put me with Fermanagh and Tyrone. However the Irish National and St. Patrick are both awesome.

Again Todd you are a wealth of information (of course most Librarians are).

I love the McCarthy, but you don't find it very often. I would ask Rocky if they'll have it, but then if he does that would mean I'd have to start jonesing again.

The Irish tartans are very interesting. After jonesing for one for some time, I recently received a 13 oz. wool kilt in the County Armagh tartan from KA. Being Borderlanders, this is relative to the familial roots. It looks great with a lovat green jacket.

I also like the County Fermanagh tartan very much!

I have a kilt in Co. Longford (pictured in my album), but I absolutely love the ancient/weathered Ulster. Brownish-red with a very subtle pattern, just great. I like the Irish National as well, but I think I want my next kilt to be a red colour.

    Tara...

I love the Tara (Murphy) tartan because it was one of the older Irish tartans (most of the county tartans were designed in the 1990's when the kilt really caught on with the Irish and Irish descendants. The colours are quite striking, and the the very name, Tara, a very sacred spot for the ancient Irish, invokes a lot of history.

Glen, Librarians are also sometimes full of something else, but I can't say what, or else Hank will be vexed with me!

    Cheers,

An OUTSTANDING choice if I say so myself!

Kinloch Anderson does the best work, don't they? It's one of the places that are well worth the money for the quality of the craftsmanship. I respect each and every one of their trained kiltmakers SO MUCH! One of my teachers is retired from there.

I'm thinking I'd like an Irish tartan before St.Pat's Day.

    Scots & St. Patrick...

    Graham,

Our local Scottish Society has marched in the Springfield St. Patrick's Day parade for a number of years; in fact, we usually provide the colour party at the head of the parade. When folks ask us why we're marching, we'll usually explain that the Scots came from Ireland originally, that we "share" St. Columba, and that St. Patrick was not "Irish", but was a Romano-Briton from either Wales or Dumbartonshire in Scotland!

Still, I'm wi' you: I would love to have an Irish tartan or a Saffron kilt to wear. I also like the Irish Caubeens and the green Irish day jackets.

    Cheers,

    T.

Hey G, if you can get your grubbies on a "Saint Patrick's Tartan" it's absolutely stunning! The Irish National is pretty tame in comparison. If I could afford a Saint Patrick's Kilt, I would jump at it in a heartbeat!!! Unfortunately, I haven't found a source that's even NEAR affordable to me.
